I am the librarian at a large high school in East Anchorage, Alaska. We have over 2,200 students. We are also one of the most diverse high schools in the nation with students from many cultures and backgrounds. About 15 percent of our students are Native Alaskan, and another 20% are white and African American. We also have students from Ethiopia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Syria, Iraq, Mexico, Columbia, Dominican Republic, American Samoa, Hawaii, the Philippines, and many other nations, with most families below the poverty level.
I work with all students at the school with research and literacy projects. I also have a maker-space table with ongoing and varied activities throughout the year. I aim to provide supplies that students need to complete projects and posters for class assignments. I also have fun activities to promote creativity and to allow students to try new things, like knitting, or origami.
