Students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. While some have considerable assistance, most of my students lack support at home due to language barriers, insufficient familiarity with the curriculum, or fear of "doing the wrong thing". PowerMyLearning Family Engagement Innovators Program” is a creative solution to this problem by incorporating a research based approach to parental involvement.
Placing the emphasis on the student teaching the parent what they have learned in school rather than the other way around, will result in better comprehension for the student and increased family involvement. English language learners can even use their native language to teach the parents.
This program consists of me assigning a "family playlist" for students to complete at home with parents after they have reviewed and practiced the skill in class with me. Parents will receive a message to open the link on their mobile device. The family will engage in the "teaching" activity and then provide feedback to me about how well the student was able to explain the topic.
