The materials I've chosen will make a difference in students' lives because these stories are powerful. Hana's Suitcase allows readers to step inside the life of a Jewish child during the Holocaust. Viewing life through her eyes, students learn about the importance of tolerance and valuing differences. These are lessons that middle school students can apply in their own lives every day.
Out of the Dust teaches students about overcoming difficulty in life. Family circumstances aren't always ideal. Bad things sometimes happen to those that we love. This historical novel focuses on the bitterness that develops between an adolescent girl and her father. Each blames the other for a family tragedy that changes their lives forever. This story will help students reflect on their own lives and the effect that holding grudges and withholding forgiveness can have on relationships.
