Reading is the most valuable skill we can teach students. First graders are just beginning to learn to read independently for pleasure and for a purpose. They are finding the value in the words on the pages and beginning to create mental images about the story and formulating opinions about the text.
First graders need a variety of books to explore as they are learning to read for pleasure and for a purpose.
My students will utilize these books throughout the day. First, students will select from their independent reading level, read and be prepared to demonstrate their understanding of the text during center time. Second, students will use these books to read to volunteers in our class. Additionally, students will select these books through the day as independent reading opportunities present themselves.
