My students will use these foam base ten blocks during math to learn about adding and subtracting decimals. They will use them in groups, with a partner, or in a station. Students need hands-on manipulatives to understand decimal place value, which they will then transfer to drawing models. Using models to add and subtract decimals is a 5th grade math standard so using the foam base ten blocks will help them make the transfer from concrete to abstract learning. The quietness of these foam blocks will allow students to work without distractions and extra noise in the classroom. These blocks are durable, washable, and can be used for many years to come. Students get very excited when it gets time to work with the base ten place value blocks.
