Universal themes and lessons learned through great literature can bring us all together. My students are encouraged to acknowledge different perspectives and gain an understanding of the struggles people face all over the world.
Through a unit about adversity and perseverance, students read novels about the harrowing experiences of people around the world; people who have encountered the horrors of war, the beauty of kindness and the challenges of trauma. When they read about the resilience of fellow humans, their empathy increases and their world-view changes. These stories open their eyes to the suffering of people around the world and allow them to build empathy and understanding.
By expanding my book choices, students will have greater exposure to diverse and culturally relevant literature; literature that is engaging and thought-provoking, literature that will make them think and open their eyes to how people all over the world live.
