Throughout their high school careers, my students come across few books that tell the stories of people like them (our school is a majority Latino, and majority first-generation-to-college). The students enrolled in my class are bright and excellent writers and challenge themselves with tough coursework, but they also need some freedom of choice in what they read, hence this book, The Distance Between Us. From a limited experience last year, this book had a powerful and affirming effect on the students who read it: if Reyna Grande could endure these struggles in Mexico and as an immigrant and still go to college, so too can my students.
