Reading is knowledge, and knowledge is power. As 8th graders, we're reflecting on how we can use our identities to improve our communities and the world around us. Generally, scholars are more invested in reading and ELA when they can see themselves in the characters that they are reading about.
By reading this novel, The Rock and the River, scholars will be exposed to how people of color have used their identities and their power in the past to enact social change. We know that the younger generation will soon be our world leaders. Therefore, it's so important that seeds of hope and inspiration are planted and cultivated within them, so that they feel that they are capable of improving their our communities and our world.
