Apartheid ended before my students were born. Most of them hear of apartheid for the first time in World History class, and they conclude that because it is history, it is no longer relevant to them. Apartheid becomes a word in a textbook.
The result I am hoping to achieve by having them read "Born a Crime" is to have students understand that history is more than words in a textbook, and still matters to them. I like Trevor Noah's book because he tells his remarkable life story with humor and love, humanizing history for the students, making it relevant.
