English language learners face many challenges in the classroom and school environment. My students want to fit in with their peers and they want to use English in a way that is meaningful. In order to transition students into English, we must lay a strong foundation in their native language. It is very difficult to find and purchase books and material in their native language. My students get excited about checking out library books, but are limited to guessing what the book actually says based off of the illustrations. If students can make connections between the spoken words and printed text, it makes it easier for them to begin to read independently.
