I teach reading to students who try to avoid it at all cost. Like most people, my students don't like to do things that they consider difficult. To help my students overcome their weaknesses in reading, our district has provided a variety of reading programs, such as i-Ready, that can help students fill in the basic reading skills they are missing. Students are encouraged to use these programs as part of their homework assignments. The only problem, these programs require computers and access to the Internet, something many of my students don't have at home.
To help my students both in school and after school, I'm trying to obtain a class set of Chromebooks. We would not only use these in class, but I would also open my classroom after school to any student who need a safe and supervised place to work on home learning assignments that required the Internet.
