Flexible seating and sensory supports are must haves when working with children with special needs. As a first year teacher, I have so many ideas and goals for my students but I currently do not have the things I need to make my ideas come to fruition.
With this project I will be able begin to create a tool kit for my students for many years to come. The seating options, pedals, weight belts and pencil supports will help to keep my students focused in the classroom by aiding in making them aware of their body, or where their body is in space, which is a concept many people with autism spectrum disorder and other cognitive disabilities have a hard time processing.
The Sensory tools requested will help my students relieve stress and focus, as they attempt to learn in a busy general education classroom of 30 students, and the lighting and diffusing scents will assist in providing my students the calming environment students with autism spectrum disorder need. Lastly, the educational supports and sensory learning materials will help me plan for each of my students specific needs and individualized learning styles.
