Times are changing and so should our classrooms. I have been doing a lot of research on flexible seating in the classroom and its benefits. Flexible seating can increase motivation and engagement, create better oxygen flow to the brain leading to higher success of learning, and use up excess energy.
Flexible seating in my classroom will give students choice and ownership over their learning, improve behavior, and lead to higher academic performance. Giving students seating options such as couches, bean bag chairs, wobble stools, and yoga balls allows students to feel more at home in my class environment, increase physical activity, and lead to more engagement in my class. I have already implemented some flexible seating in my class and the students are loving it! It reaches the needs of all my different types of students without singling anyone out. My students are highly engaged, on task, and want to work hard for me.
Not only do I want to give my students choice of their seating this year, but also choice over their learning. This year I am implementing a program called Daily 5 and Cafe which is a reading program that encourages choice and a love for reading. I need more books for my classroom library that students want to read and want to share with others.
I love to envision my students cuddled up comfortably in my classroom with a book they love, growing as readers. CAFE is the perfect word to describe the classroom I am implementing as I want students to have a menu for what they learn and produce in my classroom.
