This is the first activity dealing with energy and does not require any background, so it is an excellent opportunity to determine the backgrounds of my students. Their responses to the questions will indicate their level of understanding of what energy is and may also identify many misconceptions about energy transformations.
Students will use toys to show how energy is transferred from one form to another while obeying the Law of Conservation of Energy. They will start with the hand generator activity to convert mechanical to electrical energy to light a bulb. Then students would show how solar energy is converted into electrical energy and finally how chemical energy (oil) is converted into mechanical kinetic energy using these handheld toys.
