My students love books, but our resources are limited. Picture books provide a wealth of imagination that appeal to students of all ages. Many of my students are reading below grade level and still require picture support. Using these books will allow students to learn on-grade level concepts with the aide of fabulous art work.
By using picture books in this project, my students will be exposed to high quality literature while participating in engaging conversations around literature. Specific learning concepts include theme, story elements, and figurative language. These concepts will be explored as students learn to appreciate the importance of illustrations in books.
Based on discussion and provided criteria students will vote for their favorite picture book of the year. I will host a Mock Caldecott award ceremony for students in grades 4-8. Our ceremony will coincide with the 2018 Caldecott Award ceremony hosted by ALA on February 12, 2018.
