During a classroom discussion that was intended to transition from a unit on bullying to a unit on slavery, students informed me of a gap in their knowledge. "They teach us about slavery all the time, but we never really learned about the people who were here first. We only know about, like, Thanksgiving. Can we learn more about Native Americans?" Then, several other students chimed in, "Yeah, we want to learn more about Native Americans."
With students specifically asking for content and taking agency over their education, It is my responsibility to try and get them what they need. Great teachers are able to seize opportunities of genuine inquiry and interest of their students to produce fruitful knowledge. I hope this book, Sherman Alexi's Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, is able to bridge gaps in my students' knowledge as well as teach them more about the world in which we live.
