This project will give my 10-12 grade English students access to more current books to cultivate their love of reading. Currently, they have read most of my books, and since I have them for three years at a time, my library will have slim pickings for them before long. While we do have a school library, it is geared mostly to our younger students (however they are attempting to update it). I don't want my students to lose their love of reading, but access to new reading materials is scarce in our school and our students' families do not have the funds for independent reading materials or the time to drive them the 10-15 miles to a public library. That is why our classroom libraries are so important here. My students are always asking for new books in the classroom library, and they deserve an area in my room to relax and enjoy perusing my books during intentional reading time without worrying about my dilapidated shelves falling apart, or the lack of updated reading materials. I want them to have a place to read that they can feel proud of. Right now, we have a tiny rug, one chair (that my classes of 30 fight over) and three run down shelves, one of which that is falling apart. I want the kids to know that reading is important, and I think that making a reading nook that is easily accessible, updated, and comfortable is the first step in improving their love and appreciation for reading.
