Reading at home each night is invaluable for student success. High quality book baggies will allows students to bring their reading materials to and from their homes each week in a neat, organized package. In the past I have personally purchased hundreds of gallon-size bags to use for this purpose. Sadly, they often end up ripped, broken, or missing. The book bags I am requesting are not only a better quality, they are beautifully designed with children in mind, making students more likely to take ownership of them, keeping them and the materials inside safe and together.
Responding to literature through writing is a critical way for students to process what they have read and express their thoughts on the topic. Each week students are expected to have a written response to their "take-home book." Having a personal writing journal where they complete their response, and crayons to illustrate their ideas, is incredibly motivating to students, especially to those who do not the luxury of having drawing/ writing paper and crayons in their homes.
