Preschoolers are designed for hands-on learning. My students love to paint, build, explore, and create! Last year, we made do with a small table-top easel we could pull out as needed, but, from the get-go, it was obvious our little ones LOVED having the opportunity to create in this manner, especially with a variety of mediums to explore.
Besides being fun, having a "real" easel affords them the opportunity to work on a vertical surface which has a multitude of physical benefits, including helping students to cross the midline, increased visual attention and improved hand-eye coordination while building core strength and posture. Having a variety of engaging manipulatives that encourage open-ended play and exploration in the block, science, or table-time areas is also very important.
STEAM activities involving science, technology, engineering, art, and math encourage and challenge a preschooler’s natural sense of curiosity.
Preschoolers need time and exposure to STEAM activities daily. Exploring these skills helps them develop a strong foundation for future learning as they explore a variety of concepts through STEAM related free-play opportunities and discussion.
