Studies have shown that movement increases blood flow and helps our brains process and remember information. Movement also helps students improve their focus and concentration. Sitting in regular chairs all day long doesn't give my students the ability to engage their muscle groups in order to get blood flowing.
My students need flexible seating options, like balance discs, wobble stools and balance ball chairs so that they can maximize their learning potential by activating core muscle groups and increasing blood flow to the brain. These chairs require students to balance, which engages the core muscle groups so that they are not just sitting. Their bodies are constantly in motion. For some students, this ability to "fidget" helps them to concentrate on the skills and concepts they are learning. Other students are kinesthetic learners and need to be able to move in order to remember information. These seating options will give all of my students the chance to be more active and increase blood flow to their brains, which will help them learn more effectively.
