Students will build and decorate their Estes Alpha rockets in small groups. On a sunny and calm day we will then venture outside the classroom, insert the Jolly Logic AltimeterThree and A8-3 rocket engines into the rocket, and use the PORTA-PAD II LAUNCH PAD to shoot them up into the blue sky. We will hopefully recover the rockets for the students to take home and reuse the altimeter for many years to come. Using the data the altimeter has gathered, we will model the rockets altitude and acceleration, finding mathematical functions that best fit the data. In addition, calculus will be used to find the acceleration and maximum height of the rocket. This will show the students how data is gathered, and math is used to analyze the data.
