Lifetime Activities is a new elective class students can take as part of our Physical Education Program. Within this class students are exposed to a variety of Activities and Sports they can participate in both outside of school and into adulthood. In a school where a majority of the students are only exposed to the major sports of Basketball, Football, and Soccer it is important that we expose them to activities that are out of the norm. Orienteering is a new activity to students that is low cost and can be modified so that all students can participate. It teaches students how to read a compass and topical map, while providing a great means of fitness and competition. In order to be successful at orienteering there is a need for each student to have a compass.
These compasses will not only help in aiding the success of teaching orienteering, but will also help provide students with a valuable lifetime lesson.
Student engagement in Physical Education is higher when students are provided with adequate equipment. Students will learn how to read a compass and apply that during activities and competition. My students have already shown a passion to learn new lifetime activities and games. Therefore, I believe that with this project orienteering will be no different.
