As a high school band director in a program of over 300 students, my “classroom” is constantly on the move. We go from our main rehearsal room for one class, to the gym for another and then to the football field to get ready for Friday Night Lights. It is not uncommon for classes to be taught in three or four different locations each day, and none of them are anywhere near a desktop computer.
Today’s classroom instruction can’t come from behind a desk. The days of class lectures, note taking and handouts are long gone. I desperately need the ability to provide relevant, technology based instruction to my students wherever our “classroom” happens to be.
A few examples of how this device will be used to impact student’s education:
- mobile video applications will allow instant visual feedback to the 300+ students in the marching band
- taking Spotify to all the rehearsal spaces will allow for professional quality reference recordings for the students in the concert bands
- cloud based applications like Google Classroom and Office 365 allow tracking, storing, and accessing student performance data possible at all times.
