It is difficult for kids to fully comprehend what is explained to them through reading or listening. Students benefit from seeing and experiencing, too. When discussing plant and animal cells with my fifth graders, having the ability to show and experience these organisms in real time is imperative. Like Google Earth allows us to explore the macro world, microscopes allow students to explore our micro world and all the little organelles that live within it. These 5th graders want to be able to see these things and be able to analyze other objects for their microscopic properties. They are seeking some microscopes and supplies to assist in their journey as young scientists.
