Our classroom currently has a very shallow sensory table with no provided materials in it. The students love to use it! The new table will provide a safer, more effective tool for students to engage in these activities without the materials coming out of the table.
Children learn through active play. The sensory table serves many purposes. Academic items such as letters and numbers can be used. It serves as a sensory break for some students and calms them. It also is an excellent place in the classroom for students to engage in verbal speech interactions with one another. It is a place where they share and take turns. They problem solve and work collaboratively with one another.
The variety of materials go along with out thematic units and will be changed monthly to vary the students' learning. Other items from the classroom will be added to the table as well to create rich experiences for all children to engage in throughout the school year.
