While we are a STEM based school, it is part of our mission to encourage our students to explore their passions and to express themselves creatively. By requiring our students to participate in art based projects in conjunction with math and science classes we are able to implement both sides of their brains to work, creating well rounded academic adults who are enthusiastic about their education. Our current project introduces our 9th graders to high school learning by requiring them to work together to create beautiful murals for our school.
This mural project utilizes communication, interpersonal, and thinking and problem-solving skills while addressing community issues. Through this project we encourage our students to express themselves creatively, boosting their confidence and enabling them to want to persevere through some of the more difficult assignments we give them. This allows our students to feel better about their academic abilities making better learners overall. The mural topics that they will be assigned are about Anti-bullying and Hawaiian culture. All of the materials requested will go specifically towards painting the murals.
