The materials and supplies I am requesting are going to be used to create a "Mindfulness Center" in my classroom. We will create a peaceful area for 1-2 students where they can kick off their shoes and take part in some relaxation techniques. The area rug will stay down in the center, and the books and some calming visuals and music will be readily available for them to explore. I will have the basket with the signing bowl and chime ready to lead a guided mindfulness activity in the center or during a small or whole group activity. I have requested 2 yoga mats (with bags for them) to give the students the opportunity to strike a calming pose or two while engaged in the center Two of the books I've requested will help myself and my instructional assistant further our knowledge on additional mindfulness activities.
Children benefit from learning mindfulness in terms of improved cognitive functions, social-emotional skills and overall well being. Studies show that social skills at this age predict improved education, employment, crime, substance abuse and mental health outcomes in adulthood.
As a dedicated and passionate educator, I want to help each of my students become well rounded individuals who are able to express their emotions in a healthy and appropriate way. I am confident that my "Mindfulness Center" will be a great addition to our classroom, and will change the lives of everyone that uses it.
