My students will find inspirational stories that reflect both their personal and historical experiences within our community. While my curious students would love to explore the larger world beyond the neighborhood boundaries, they are means-limited in what they can accomplish on their own. By making a personal connection with the struggles and successes of recognizable literary characters, our students will discover avatars they can relate to and empathize with. As they find aspects of themselves in what they read about, they will begin to reap the personal rewards of advancing their academic pursuits.
This project will help my students envision themselves as peers worthy of the same acclaim of those they read about. We will use these books in a book-club format, where students can openly discuss how the stories inspire, motivate, or reinforce their learning lives, making them more excited about reading. This will contribute to a class library where students can continue to their learning beyond the confines of the classroom.
