“The Learning Carpet”, a permanently gridded 100 square floor mat fosters understanding and interest of math concepts through kinesthetic learning. The gains for students will be numerous and some of them are listed here:
o Students’ number sense will grow through the use of patterns observed in the numerical squares.
o Students will better understand math concepts after linked to actual physical movement (e.g. forward step is addition, backward step is subtraction, one square up subtracts ten, one square down adds ten, etc).
o Students will become better at problem solving as the use of “The Learning Carpet” helps children to think, reflect and problem solve, and explore new ideas in a non-threatening manner.
o Students will learn that process and estimation are key factors in the learning outcome.
o This way of teaching math facilitates individual and group learning. It fosters independence, cooperation, confidence, and positive self-esteem.
