Where my children live they come to school that first year, and they have never held a book in their hands. They start off as struggling readers eager to learn. By the time they reach me in the fourth grade, they are no longer learning to read, but they are reading to learn. I would love to give them access to what is new and current out there, what middle class kids have access to everyday. They can have those same experiences in their minds with the characters in those great books.
