Learning how to play instruments has been scientifically proven to greatly benefit the minds of young children. It connects both hemispheres of the brain, and helps with locomotor movements. Learning an instrument helps improve visual, aural, and kinesthetic senses. Instruments also help with building memory, which will in turn help students in many other facets of their education.
My students love when they get to play instruments in music class. It is something that they look forward to every week when they come to my room. Playing boomwhackers, Orff instruments, and recorders are some of the most requested activities I get from students. However, the new craze that is going throughout music classrooms across the nation, is playing ukuleles.
In class, we watched a video of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole playing 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow/ What A Wonderful World' on ukulele, and ever since then, my students have caught the "Ukulele Bug" and have been begging me to get some for our classroom. Unfortunately, being at such a small school, my budget does not go a long way.
Learning how to play a ukulele will give them a new experience playing a new type of instrument many have never even seen in person before! A ukulele is unlike all the other instruments we play, and has to be handled differently than the rest. The students will build upon their skills they have learned in music, and will be able to apply past knowledge of instruments while learning a brand new one!
