Obtaining a class set of recently published chapter books that also connect with my students' cultural and immigration experiences is crucial for my students' learning. When readers connect on a personal level with the character of a book, they begin to develop a longer-term investment in reading. Many popular age-appropriate chapter books feature white students from middle-class homes. This is not my students' experience. Rather, a book about a student straddling two different cultures (American and Colombian) would be something similar to what they experience daily. In addition, most of my students are English Language Learners. This book, Juana and Lucas, not only features characters that my students can relate to, but the book includes pictures, bolded new words, and is at an appropriate reading level for my students. All of these features will work toward improving my students' reading fluency, word accuracy, and reading comprehension.
