Reading without the added stress of a worksheet, or answering an inference question, of locating the theme, is something my students joyfully, but rarely do of their own volition. My classroom has books, but they are the cheapest or 'free with bonus points', book order books I could buy. They are not necessarily of the highest quality or the most engaging, but we would like that to change. Some children also tend to 'keep them', which results in a need to replenish the library.
Donating to this reading project helps my students be better human beings by exposing them to many aspects of the human condition they will not be able to learn on social media. Most books are listed by the National Council for Social Studies.
