My students are anime/manga/comic book obsessed, but most live at or near the poverty line. They would be thrilled to own their own mangas that they can read and trade with their friends. They would each have a chance to pick out a new book at each of our after school meetings, and once they finish reading it, they can trade with their friends. They will also have access to how to draw anime guides so they can work on drawing some of their favorite characters.
Having their own books at home to read and share with their friends will increase their excitement about reading and strengthen their friendships. They've been through so much with the pandemic, and manga brings so much joy to their lives.
