My students will have a regular English teacher but will come to my classroom daily for targeted help with literacy skills. The last thing I want is for these students to feel a stigma or think of this as a punishment. It should feel like a safe place and time to participate without fear.
To that end, I envision a classroom that feels like a safe haven for these reluctant readers, stocked with updated furniture and materials that feel special. The carpets will supplement those I've already purchased; their dual purpose is to keep the kids clean AND visually designate various stations of work happening simultaneously. Bean bag chairs have two jobs as well: some days, these will be incentive seats for students who meet behavior goals or would like to partner read; other days, the bean bag chairs will simply be "calming corners" for students engrossed in a book or needing extra personal space. And finally, clipboards are multifaceted and my favorite way to take the classroom out of doors.
