Reading The 57 Bus will help students see their diverse identities reflected in their lessons. Many of my students identify as LGBTQ or allies of the LGBTQ community, and yet, for the majority of their lives, they have never read books about characters in this community.
Students will engage in complex discussions about gender, sexuality and acceptance, as well as improve their reading and writing skills in an engaging way. The book is a compelling look at one LGBTQ teen's true life story, and it will surely bring more students into the conversation. In addition, it illustrates the dangers of homophobia today and will teach students how to address this issue in their own lives.
