My low income, struggling middle school readers, many who are learning English need the extra push when it comes to reading. I have a diverse student population and many lack motivation when it comes to reading because they are already years behind in comprehension and vocabulary.
A stress ball, slow rising squishy or smelly sticker encourage students who do not believe in themselves or see a purpose in reading to keep reading. These small incentives and prizes will mean a great deal to my students. When they finish books, they are entered into raffles. My students have particular genres they like to read but they need to step out of their genre comfort zone to advance as readers. Middle school students need to keep reading to increase their vocabulary knowledge. Those who read, learn new words necessary to function in society. Those who do not read, fall further behind and the gap widens. The more students read, the better they understand the world around them. These materials and prizes will motivate my students who normally struggle with motivation and who do not have the funds to purchase these items on their own.
