These hard-working, enthusiastic, selfless young people will have the opportunity to develop themselves into leaders as they positively impact their schools and communities through the Kiwins District Convention (DCON). However, DCON is in Los Angeles, and these kids need help to pay for the bus to transport them to and from their destination. The Kiwins District Convention is an important step in leadership development for these kids as they learn how to use their talents for the good of their school and neighborhoods.
In the words of one of my students who attended the convention last year, "The convention changed my life and transformed me into a better person in life and into a leader." Last year, DCON was even more inspiring than I hoped. My students were able to learn how to run for elections, how to eat in a professional/white-table-cloth setting, how to effectively collaborate with other community organizations for neighborhood projects, how to build strong student clubs, and much more! The many workshops offered at DCON were student focused with practical outcomes.
These kids are self-motivated to feed the homeless, organize food drives, raise funds for charities, pick up litter, and much more because they truly care and want better for their community.
These inspiring kids are proof that even low-income, high-crime cities like Richmond are fertile grounds for the development of young leaders with vision and purpose.
