My students live in a rural farm-working community in the outskirts of Fresno California. This community is surrounded by fields of vineyards and citrus trees. Many of my students' parents work in these fields or in the packing houses surrounding the community.
My students face many challenges at home as well as in their community. Gang affiliation is prevalent as well as poverty, and many come from single parent homes. Nonetheless my students are resilient and come to school with a positive attitude ready and excited to learn.
Additionally my students come from diverse backgrounds. This allows us to see and respect our differences. It also presents some challenges in that some students are still learning English.
