Not only will this book help my students to grow academically, I truly feel their humanity will be affected as well. With the ever growing publication of terror attacks within our country and around the world, I strongly feel emphasizing empathy and compassion to this generation of children will create a lasting effect for future years to come. Instilling the message of this book within young minds to take with them into high school, college and beyond can foster a sense of unity against violence. Compassion is one of the strongest tools our society can use, and I want my students to fill their lives with it.
Projects that I can use with these books are endless, including tapping into bullying at its core and discussing the repercussions of ostracizing people, discussing differences among people and how to celebrate them rather than chastise them and discussing the power of standing up for whats right in the face of people who are trying to knock you down. I really feel this book will touch the hearts of my students and I look forward to hearing their deep analysis of its content.
