I teach first-grade at a Headstart through 5th-grade school in North Miami. Most of my students are high-poverty and have limited resources at home.
For most of our students, basic school supplies are a luxury that they do not have at home.
After Hurricanes Maria and Irma, the financial situation for most of our students became even worse than before. Most students are still facing the challenges of coming to school with pencils and paper. Most do not even have computer access at home.
The most unfortunate part was that after the hurricanes struck, most students came back with fewer supplies and less access to the tools they need to be successful.
I am requesting 100 writing practice workbooks, pencils and a sharpener, which will be used for writing activities. My students now need to be able to learn how to write and most importantly, express themselves in writing.
Currently, my classroom is very limited in terms of writing materials and utensils. Every day, I have to provide pencils and paper to unfortunate students who have none. We also need headphones for our listening center. Your support would ensure that all students have the materials they need throughout the school year.
