These wobble chairs and soft seats will mean so much not only to me but the students in my classroom. It can be challenging to be asked to sit for a long period of time. "The 4-year-old may spend 7-8 minutes on a single activity, or as much as 15 minutes if the activity is new and especially interesting." -Helen Fowler Neville, B.S., R.N This will encourage my students who have difficulty focusing, to engage and connect with the lesson being taught. It will also provide them with a space they can control and feel safe in, so they are able to learn. "Four-year-olds understand it is harder to pay attention to uninteresting tasks, or when distracted by noise or their own thoughts. They are more likely to stay interested when they're comfortable with the task or project and feel successful."
I want to provide them the best learning environment possible. I don't want them to worry about not being able to sit still because it's something they really can't control. Some students need a source for sensory output, and this flexible seating will allow them the opportunity to feel supported and understood. They will be able to move and adjust where and how they sit to their comfort. At the moment, our classroom library has no comfy spots for students to sit and read. By providing students with soft seats, they will be able to be comfortable while reading and want to visit our class library. The wobble chairs will provide students who need an output while trying to learn that opportunity. This will allow more time to be spent on learning and less on redirection from teachers. Our classroom community will be strengthened because students will have options and be more likely to take turns using alternative seating.
