I teach Tk-2 students with severe developmental, cognitive, and physical impairments in the Specialized Healthcare program. My students work towards independence in the areas of mobility, communication, and self care.
Where a wheelchair can place restrictions upon our students, our program and classroom do not. When my students enter my classroom they park their wheelchairs outside and transition into the classroom into adapted equipment to promote their independence. Students use adapted classroom chairs for easy transfers, optimal positioning and instant access to any activity. Some students use a gait trainer to assist with walking so nothing stands between them and the places they want to go. Students also use a mobile stander to give them opportunities to interact with peers and their curriculum
We celebrate little wins together each day!
