Through the use of calm down boxes in each of our K-5 classrooms, our students will learn and apply the use of coping strategies in school and their daily lives. This is a critical emotional skill that would allow for student success in all areas of life.
The calm down box would help prevent the escalation of intense emotions and would provide the student to independently self regulate their own behavior. Teachers have been trained how to effectively use and model the calm down boxes with their students .By using calm down boxes, it limits the classroom disruptions and encourages students to learn self regulation.
Students would have the opportunity to calm down with the support of the sensory objects in the calm down boxes. Students will be able to select what best fits their individual needs to help them self regulate their behavior. Each box will contain items such as : plush mermaid key chain, TY Beanie Boo, glitter wand, squishies, silly putty, and pin wheels, mini notepad, and a timer. With the support of these sensory objects students would be able to calm down, share what was upsetting them and continue on learning within their school day.
