It is important to feel good about oneself; furthermore, when basic needs are met, a person is more likely to perform or function better. As part of the Classroom Guidance Curriculum, the counseling department does focus on hygiene and self-care. Here at our elementary school, we collaborate with local organizations, churches, and local clubs to help meet the needs of our students. I also present hygiene lessons to the students on the importance of taking care of our mind and body. We discuss how to use shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothbrush, and toothpaste and why these items are essential to our daily lives. We also would like for each child to have sample items when the items are available. If this project is funded, we would have a much greater chance of meeting the needs of many of our students.
Our elementary building consists of students from Pre-K through fifth grade. We usually average close to 500 students in our building. My goal is for every student to receive a "personal care kit." I feel as though the students are more likely to develop productive hygiene habits if they have the products available to use for own personal, individual use. My goal as a school counselor is to help close the social, emotional, and academic gap among students. With the help of caring people and organizations, we can help close these gaps by showing compassion and love to our students.
