Reading helps kids to develop critical thinking skills, abstract reasoning, and empathy, as well as world experience. Furnishing my classroom with a range of new and classic literary works improves the chances of finding the work that grabs them and awakens them to the myriad wonders and pleasures of reading, leading to a life of reading. These kids need a countervailing force to confusing and superficial media and, often, weakened human interactions. Books take kids out of the city, out of the limits of their physical world, out of themselves, and into the lives of others, past and present, in highly imaginative, but instructive ways.

About my class
