I went ahead and told my students that if they currently do not like to read, it's probably because they're not reading books they like. My students need these books so that they are exposed to literature that hits close to home for them. They need to read books they identify with, books that inspire them.
My students cannot afford to buy their own lunch, let alone books from Amazon or Barnes and Noble. I know the public library is there for me and my students, but it is difficult for me to check out a class set of a particular book.
These books would not only serve to help build a love of reading, but also as a window into a bigger world than my students currently know.
