My class is in need of four Sphero BOLTS that will enable me to create student-driven STEAM group projects. Each group will collaborate and write code to operate the Sphero Robot. Each student will be responsible for programming a portion of the activity. Once the program is written, an app will be used (SWIFT, Sphero, etc.) to operate the robot. The robot will follow the code written and then students will determine if the activity is a success. Modifications to the program will be made when necessary.
The Sphero BOLTS will take critical thinking skills to a new level because it embraces creativity and unlocks the imagination. It allows students to code the Sphero BOLT to perform tasks and functions - functions that can be used in cross-curriculum lessons. For instance, Geography and History classes can code a map the Allies used to storm the Beaches of Normandy during WWII; or the PE class can create a programmable bowling ball and the Physics class analyze speed and velocity.
Students will gain a strong coding/programming foundation that will prepare them to take the next step and apply what they have learned by meeting performance expectations aligned with Next Generation Science Standards. The benefit of the Sphero will allow our programming curriculum to go to the next level of technology in our district.
Studies have proven that a curriculum enriched with technology enhances the learning experience. When the technology can be seen actually functioning in real-world situations, the level of critical thinking and problem solving is increased significantly. The Sphero BOLT will allow us to do just that!
