In our 6th grade classroom students are taught that it's not JUST math time, JUST science time, JUST writing time. In the real world, these subjects work together to create real learning, connections, and discoveries. From day one of 6th grade, students have been expected to ask questions, research, follow the engineer cycle, write their claims with found evidence, and consider "failures" as being one step closer to success. Without technology in the classroom, this can sometimes be a challenging thing to do.
Having Chromebooks directly in the classroom allows students to enhance their learning. Students are taught how to ask questions and find answers online. It is so much more rewarding when a student can guide their own learning and has the desire to do so! Students today are born into a world of technology. Having it readily available in the classroom invites students into a modern day setting to learn.
Also, our school has been lucky to start a reading program, Lexia. This program finds the holes that students need additional support with. It includes multiple lessons and activities that are done online that help get students to their appropriate reading level. By having Chromebooks available in the classroom, students can take turns working on improving their literacy skills individually while I instruct small groups.
