Right now, my students need the basics. More students are running out of pencils and erasers every day. I am a first year teacher, so I don't have a lot of items in stock. We have no highlighters, no dry erase boards for the students, and no classroom art supplies.
When students know that the supplies they need will always be available to them, their confidence and excitement grow. Instead of spending valuable minutes finding crayons to borrow, students can get what they need quickly and without embarrassment. Highlighters encourage students to go back to the text and find evidence (a crucial skill in third grade) and dry erase boards allow us to do quick class math reviews. The items that we need are staples in any classroom!
